Knowing where you stand gives you a good baseline and a solid starting point. It's also motivating because you have a clear objective and can measure your progress. This is especially helpful if you encounter difficulties at any point, as we all do when it comes to training horses and achieving our goals!
Most importantly, self-assessment is a way to take control of your own progress. You can steadily move forward and improve the quality of your training from a 0 to a 3, from a 3 to a 5, from a 5 to a 7, and even reach a few 8s, 9s, or 10s along the way!
Make it a habit to objectively rate yourself and your horse.
This is what great riders, trainers and horsemen do naturally.
The progress booklet is printed on high-quality 175g matte paper. It allows you to review your personal progress and that of your horse within the curriculum every 3 months (the first year), then every 6 months. It is structured as follows:
- Cover page 1: Who are you and who is your horse, what is your big goal, your dreams?
- Page 2: The objectives to achieve in each module for a happy relationship and partnership with your horse. What is a connected horse? What is a relaxed, laid-back horse? What is a horse responsive to the aids? What is a confident horse? etc. When you know what these are, they are easier to achieve.
- Page 3: Current problems! What is YOUR reality? Where are you now? Where are your problems? Where are you stuck? Being able to verbalize the problems you encounter not only allows you to identify them, but the program also helps you understand which modules these problems belong to. We go around problems without ever truly solving them when we don't know their real root cause. Here, the Happy Horse program not only reveals their origin, but then leads you to the final page: the solutions!
- Page 4: The solutions are in the appropriate lessons for each module! The Happy Horse program is about learning to read, understand, and then literally "speak horse." When you apply the right strategy, all the problems magically disappear, and you can focus on your goals and the dreams you want to share with your horse.
