What are the mental needs of horses?
A happy horse is a horse in a herd, with freedom of movement and fiber (hay/grass) for its diet. This is the foundation, but it only addresses the horses' physiological needs. If horses were happy with just this, then why are there so many problems in riding arenas? Why do all these horses I meet tell me that things aren't going well with their riders?
Perhaps because physiological needs aren't the only ones we should be meeting? Horses have minds and experience intense emotions, sometimes extremely intense for some. How do we care for them? How do we help them when things aren't going well?
And finally, what are the needs that need to be met for my horse?
I invite you to delve into your horse's mind this evening and understand his world through his eyes. Horses never speak without meaning. They express a great many ideas, suggestions, emotions, and opinions about everything we do with them. And remember this: the more they know you can read them, the more they will tell you!
This conference is offered to you and plunges you directly into the heart of a poignant topic in our current equine industry: how to make my horse happy? How to know if he is well? What are his real needs?
